Description

The Location Matters lab at North Carolina State University seeks a creative, motivated Ph.D. student with an interest in spatial social network analysis to join our team. The position will begin Fall 2023 and is funded for four years at $30,000/year, plus benefits and tuition waiver, through the interdisciplinary Ph.D. program in Geospatial Analytics offered by NC State’s Center for Geospatial Analytics (geospatial.ncsu.edu).

The selected applicant will join a research group focused on understanding environmental and disaster recovery policy implementation through social science frameworks. The student will be actively involved in collaborations with communities recovering from disaster and non-profit and government organizations supporting social and ecological resilience. The student will be encouraged to weave their interests and career goals into these rich community-university partnerships.

The Center for Geospatial Analytics at NC State is an internationally recognized hub for interdisciplinary data scientists pushing the boundaries of spatial data science to advance discovery and inform real-world decision-making (geospatial.ncsu.edu/research). Our work involves deep collaboration with government, industry, and community partners to address environmental and societal challenges. We are especially committed to increasing the representation of students that have been historically underrepresented in U.S. higher education.

Our program includes:

  • Multidisciplinary advising from over a dozen departments across the university
  • Curriculum offering core courses in topics such as remote sensing, geovisualization, and data data mining, as well as discipline-specific electives
  • Experiential learning including a professional seminar, conference travel opportunities, and geospatial externship

Our values:

  • Prioritizing student mental health and well-being
  • Open data and data ethics
  • Environmental and social justice
  • Collaboration, community and equity

Review of applications will begin immediately and continue until the position is filled. To apply, complete the application at grad.ncsu.edu/apply

For more information about the position, contact Dr. Bethany Cutts (bbcutts@ncsu.edu) and include a copy of your resume or CV. Additional details about the Ph.D. program in Geospatial Analytics and complete application instructions are available at go.ncsu.edu/geospatial-phd. Interested students are also encouraged to contact Rachel Kasten, Graduate Services Coordinator (rachelkasten@ncsu.edu or 919-515-2800), with questions about the program or to explore additional opportunities.

Requirements

Applicants should hold a degree in geography, public administration, cultural studies or a related discipline. Experience with spatial analysis or statistical analysis is strongly recommended.
